CEDAR

The cedar tree has been revered for its spiritual significance for thousands of years. Its wood was used for the doors of sacred temples and burned in cleansing ceremonies for purification. Cedar is first and foremost a medicine of protection. It is often used to cleanse a home when first moving in, inviting unwanted spirits to leave and protecting a person, place or object from unwanted influences. The smoke of burning cedar is said to attract the good spirits and eliminate negative energies.

SAGE + RUE

Sage is versatile and effective, it’s suitable for most any smudging ritual—cleansing, healing, protection, meditation, and so on. The smoke is used to bless, cleanse and heal a person, object or area being smudged. Sage is used to ‘wash off’ the outside world when one enters ceremony or other sacred space. Objects are likewise washed off with sage medicine smoke to rid them of unwanted influences are used for healing and cleansing. It also has anti- bacterial qualities for the air.

Rue has been known as a cleansing and protective herb since ancient times. When used as a smudging herb, it can clear out the most persistent negative energies. In medieval Europe, Rue was known as the Herb of Grace. It was hung in windows and doorways to keep out evils spirits and witches. An Italian folk charm called the Cimaruta is fashioned in the shape of a sprig of Rue. It may be added to cleansing washes, incenses, and all manner of protective charms. It is said to bring blessings of love and prosperity, and to improve second sight. Rue corresponds to Mars, the goddess Diana, and the realm of Faery.

JUNIPER

Juniper is an excellent addition to a more standard smudges. Most smudges are designed to clear negative energy and juniper does this as well. But, juniper can also create a safe, protective, positive, healing space when the negative energy is removed. Juniper berries are energetically and physically detoxifying as well as centering. Juniper is probably one of the most ancient plants. Juniper is said to have a masculine, protective energy, and is used in spells of cleansing and prosperity. Juniper is best used for blessing a new venture or dwelling, and inviting in abundance.
